Albert Frost has been rocking the Blues for almost two decades. Having made a name for himself in the early ’90s as the guitarist for the seminal band, The Blues Broers, Albert is an all-round master guitarist with a passion for music that reflects over any audience.

He has performed and recorded with some of South Africa’s best musicians, including Ali Farka Toure, Vusi Mahlasela, Arno Carstens, Koos Kombuis, Valiant Swart, Riku Latti, Louis Mhlanga and Simon Orange. He has shared stages with The Rolling Stones, R.E.M., Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, The Pixies and Simple Minds, and has performed for Nelson Mandela. Albert contributes to the albums of many local artists and is loved by crowds the world over.

In 2010 he released his first solo studio EP, ‘Devils & Gods’, and these days is focusing more on his performances as a solo artist. Albert is a mood-man who can perform intimate solo shows and an electrifying fusion of blues and rock ‘n roll funk with his trio.

Bow Tie Bureaucracy (BTB) is an elegant and sophisticated function band that specialises in music of the Swing era. BTB is led by vocalist and saxophonist Gavin Minter, and includes some of Cape Town’s finest musicians. BTB can be adapted to suit any function: they can perform as a 7-piece band, a 10-piece band or even a full 22-piece big band.

The music is always the finger-snapping, toe-tapping music of the ’40s and ’50s, covering a wide range of vocal and instrumental music in the vein of Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, Tony Bennett and other well-known jazz crooners and composers.

The instantly mobile acoustic band for trains, boats, planes, gardens, ballrooms, lounges, dockside and everything in between; any time, rain or shine. The Dixie Swingers are an acoustic band of seasoned professionals, five in all, who play acoustic music from the 1920s, ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s – specialising in well-known Dixieland and swing.

They pride themselves on providing easy, relaxing, no-stress entertainment for the client, guests and organiser. With almost no set up or departure time, no sound checks or equipment issues, they are the fuss-free band who provides a unique feel for any event.

The George Mari Band has a wide repertoire including a large selection of Afro-jazz standards, popular/mainstream jazz favourites and original compositions. The band performs regularly in and around Durban.

Regular performances include a residency at Zack’s at the Musgrave Centre and at Wilson’s Wharf, the BAT Centre, Gateway, the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (University of Kwa-Zulu Natal) and at the Sun Coast and Sibaya Casinos. The band is regularly hired for a wide variety of corporate functions in Kwa-Zulu Natal and is currently resident band at the St. Tropez Sidewalk Café in Essenwood Road.

A flexible band that moves from blues to swing and from bebop to modern jazz, spiced with a Latin flavour, the Glenn Robertson Jazz Band’s musical style is rooted in jazz, encompassing a unique Gospel feel. The band comprises Glenn (vocals and percussion), Tony Drake (piano), André Henry (bass), Jamie Sandoval (drums) and Donveno Prins (saxophone).

All experienced musicians in their own right, the Glenn Robertson Jazz Band can be tailored to suit any function, and features many of South Africa’s best solo performers as guest artists.

The Hotshots perform a mix of swing, blues and rock ‘n roll which has seen them become the go-to band of the underground swing scene in Cape Town. They have performed for many Speak-Easy and prohibition-themed parties and for corporate events including the Playboy South Africa V.I.P. Media Launch and the launch of Ryk Neethling’s Red Wine at Val de Vie.

The Hotshots is fronted by vocalist, Haydn Gardner, whose passion for this genre of music is matched only by his beautiful tone and suave, swingin’ attitude! Haydn is backed by some of the top musicians in Cape Town: Jason Reolon (keyboard/piano), Dan Shout (saxophone), Romy Brauteseth (double bass) and Jonno Sweetman (drums).

The main goal of the Hotshots is to have a good time and to teleport their listeners on a journey; bringing new, fresh life to old jazz standards whilst re-arranging modern hits with more swingin’, funkier grooves!

The Jason Reolon Trio, featuring Wesley Rustin (bass) and Heinrich Goosen (drums), truly reflects the complexity and diversity of pianist Jason Reolon’s musical influences.

African flavours, montuno rhythms and lyrical melodies culminate in an eclectic fusion, forming a rich and cohesive music style which takes audiences on a spell-binding journey. The trio released its first album ‘Off the Record’ in 2007, followed by a second, all-original album entitled ‘Outline’ in 2011. This latest offering is a true representation of his musical philosophy, possessing a purity and simplicity that captures the essence and poetry of each work. ‘Outline’ tells an open-ended story, giving the listener room to contemplate and interpret the album within a moving and provocative framework.

The trio also recently collaborated with renowned South African jazz pianist Andrew Ford and his trio in the live DVD recording of their show ‘Double Standards’, for the 10th anniversary of the Jazz at the Nassau concert series.

An 18-piece group comprising 5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, guitar, keyboard, bass, drums and vocals. Spectacular singer Denay Willie fronts the band, with Richard Pickett providing the male vocals. The MC Big Band is the only band of its kind in the country to offer a full range of styles in the big band setting, from the ’40s classics of Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman to the contemporary dance music of today, as well as indigenous South African styles. The MC Big Band has worked regularly with the country’s top vocal artists including Gloria Bosman, Judith Sephuma and Melanie Scholtz, among other leading jazz and pop artists. The band also available in smaller formats of 12 and 8 players, with the same extensive and wide-ranging repertoire.

The MC Big Band has performed at high-profile events such as the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival and the Oude Libertas Summer Series, and at the country’s top social functions including the Sheraton Spring Ball, the Solstice Foundation Ball, the Fancourt Spring Ball and Artists for AIDS Awareness.

The Muirhead Quartet is a project featuring Bruce Muirhead (guitar), Mark Fransman (saxophone), Shaun Johannes (bass) and Heinrich Goosen (drums).

Their music can be loosely placed in a funk or groove style, though creative ideas are balanced with respect to genre. As a group they tread fresh territory, navigating between the tried and tested and new impulses. The sounds of shared and individual heritages are encouraged, not just compositionally, but in the way the songs are approached and performed.

The band formed in 2006 after playing together in different combinations over many years. They found their feet as a quartet almost immediately, and released their self-titled debut album in October 2006. The Muirhead Quartet regularly performs in and around Cape Town, at public and private functions.

Strait & Narro is a new generation sound, incorporating funk, hip-hop, R&B, jazz and trip-hop elements. Their songs are about the joys and social challenges of living in Cape Town, South Africa and the world.

The band members have all toured the world as backing musicians for artists like Jimmy Dludlu, Zim Ngqawana, Winston Mankunku Ngozi, Sylvia Mdunyelwa, Johnny Clegg, Paul Hanmer, Allou April, Springbok Nude Girls, Marcus Wyatt and Judith Sephuma, to name a few.

Strait & Narro is Mark Fransman (composer, piano/keyboard), Melanie Scholtz (vocals), Lee Thompson (trumpet), Buddy Wells (saxophones), Wesley Rustin (bass), Kevin Gibson (drums) and Gavin Minter (percussion).

The desire of a group of musicians from different cultures and nationalities, including South Africa, Argentina and Mozambique, to unite and fuse different styles of music, resulted in the launch of the World Music, Afro-tropical band, Tucan Tucan.

Their music is kaleidoscope of sound; a vibrant melting pot of African rhythms such as Kwasa Kwasa, Marrabenta, Mbaqanga, Maskandi and High Life with South American elements from Samba, Salsa and Chacarera, as well as jazz influences and lyrics in African languages, Spanish, Portuguese and English. At present Tucan Tucan is taking a step further into their already innovative sound by blending a house/dance flavour into their brand new releases.

Their 2011 release, ‘We Are Growing’, is now available online.
