Saxophonist, composer and arranger, Buddy Wells is a highly versatile performer who has played and recorded with artists from South Africa and around the world.
He has worked with legends like Miriam Makeba, Winston Mankunku Ngozi, Bheki Mseleku, Moses Molelekwa, Jimmy Dludlu, Vusi Khumalo, Abdullah Ibrahim, Gito Baloi, Herb Ellis, Gloria Bosman, Dave Ledbetter, Carlo Mombelli, Musa Manzini, Marcus Wyatt, and well-known groups such as Interzone, Loading Zone, Virtual Jazz Reality, Blues Broers and Trully Fully Hey Shoo Wow Band, amongst others.
Buddy is bandleader for Kusasa (Winner of the 1995 SAMIX Best Unsigned Band Competition), and The Truly Fully Hey Shoo Wow Band (Nominated for the 1997 SAMA Award for best Contemporary Pop Album) and composes for both bands. He was responsible for the brass arrangements on Jimmy Dludlu’s ‘Echoes From The Past’, which won two 1998 SAMA Awards for best Contemporary Jazz Album and for Best Newcomer. Buddy was the winner of the prestigious SAMRO Overseas Scholarship Competition in 1996.
He is a graduate of the South African College of Music at UCT with a First Class B.Mus Honours in Jazz Performance.
