Originally formed in 1990 as Brenda Fassie’s backing band, they played their first gig as Loading Zone at Kippie’s Jazz Café in New Town, Johannesburg. Since then, the band has worked with a host of prominent musicians including Miriam Makeba, the late saxophonist Mike Makgalamela, Chico Twalo and French-based Congolese star Papa Wemba.
Loading Zone’s past members include Jimmy Dludlu and Judith Sephuma. Current members, all of whom have performed with some of the most renowned musicians in the country, include Frank Paco (drums), John Hassan (percussion), Lucas Khumalo (bass), Allou April (guitar), Sylvester Mazinyane (keys/piano), and Jacko Ngoka (vocals). The diversity in the member’s skill experience and background is evident in their wide repertoire, which includes traditional African standards, jazz, Afro-pop, fusion, and even funk.
Whatever they play, the music is always loaded with touches of Sepedi, SiSwati, Mozambican, Brazilian and Cape rhythms and melodies.
