Sandile Gontsana was born in Gugulethu to a musical family. His music career started when he began studying African Music at the UCT College of Music in 2004, under the supervision of Dizu Plaatjies.
He soon discovered his love of jazz and in 2005 changed his major to Jazz Studies, where he was taught by Abigail Petersen, Dr Andrew Lilley, Professor Mike Campbell, Darryl Andrews and Amanda Tiffin. This young jazz musician has grown over the past few years and has performed with great South African and international musicians like the UCT Big Band, João Cabral Armando, Denay Willie and Jazz Jamaica Band – a group from the UK featuring Soweto Kinch and Abraham Wilson. He has been involved in many shows and performances around Cape Town, including Swing on a Star and Noah of Cape Town, at the Grand West Casino.
Sandile is currently finishing his Post Graduate Diploma in Jazz Singing at the UCT College of Music.
